As good as apples are for the HCG weight loss diet, they can become tiring when you have them every day. This is where the following applesauce recipe comes to the rescue.
The key for making applesauce is to keep the serving size right for each meal. You can make applesauce out of a single apple, although that would be too much work for every meal. Just take the number of apples that you want, for example six. Core them and slice them (peeled if you wish, although this is not important). Put them into a saucepan and add a quarter cup of water for each apple. Simmer them until they are soft. The amount of simmering time corresponds to how crisp the apples are to start with. Granny Smith apples will take longer than Red Delicious apples.
Once you have them softened, mash them with a potato masher or similar tool, then whip them into a sauce in your blender or food processor.
Adding Great Flavor
I am partial to Stevia to make things sweeter without adding calories. Most recipes for desserts that call for Stevia recommend powder, either in packets or from a scoop. If you use powder, take great care to not overdo it. Stevia is VERY sweet!
My favorite Stevias are the liquids because they come with different flavors. My top choice is English Toffee flavor, although Vanilla Creme comes in a close second. Add a dropperful of one of these (or any other flavor) to a 6-apple batch and see for yourself how miraculously the flavor changes.
Cinnamon is almost a must. Add to taste. This makes applesauce into applesauce in my mind. Without it, this recipe would just be for applepaste (OK…I made that word up, although you get the idea).
One More Idea
I have found that I can take a small dollop of applesauce and spread it onto a Melba snack cracker for a very nice dessert with cookie-like crunch. This is how I sometimes like to eat the Melba toast portion of my HCG diet meal. Just a thought.
All the best,
Dr. D
