HCG Diet and No ExerciseMy clients continually ask me about the importance of exercise while doing the HCG Weight Loss Diet. The surprising answer comes from Dr. Simeons’ book, which is summarized in this recent article:

Why No Exercise on the HCG Diet?

Dr. Simeon’s HCG diet protocol calls for no exercise, yet you hear people arguing this point back and forth some in support of exercise and others who follow the HCG diet instructions to the letter. So, let’s take a look at why you are advised to not exercise while following the HCG diet. Yes, it sounds absolutely counter-intuitive to rest while trying to lose a pound a day, but once you understand the science behind these instructions you will no longer argue this point. So sit back and relax while your body re-sculpts itself. Read More Here…

This is so true. Exercise can stress your body, and the HCG diet is a time when your body is rebuilding. So let it relax and hey why is someone looking for an excuse to exercise, you think it\’d be the other way around.

In discussing this topic with a colleague who is an exercise physiologist and fitness trainer, we think the relatively slower use of abnormal fat for energy contributes to the weak feeling people get on the HCG diet. Your point that the body is rebuilding also makes sense. The diet protocol is definitely a time when the body is putting energy from fat into physical recovery. Thanks for the comment!

Speaking of an excuse to excersice. I am in the military and I have a physical fitness test in 12 days and a height-weight-tape test, which I am 4 inches on the stomach to big for right now. I just started the diet today and I have read that if you don’t excercise while on the diet, then when you do start to excercise, it will feel like your muscles need to work harder to perform, until they adjust that is. Well I am on the borderline of passing my PT test, so I need to keep training (pushups, situps and 2 mile run)Does anyone have any advise for me? What results can I expect? Does anyone think I can lose the 4 inches I need to in 12 days, and will my necessity to work out, at least a little, hinder my progress or will this diet hurt my ability to pass the push up, sit up and 2 mile run test in 12 days? Thanks. Please any advise?

    Hi, Russ:

In the time that you sent your question, I discovered the best fitness program to be one derived from the Nautilus method. It you are unfamiliar with this method, you can get up to speed by taking a look at the first video in a series on this topic, by Dr. Doug McGuff. It has influenced me to start a fitness blog to spread the good word. I posted a link to his first YouTube video on my new blog (still under development, so please excuse any messiness that you might find there). It is at:

    http://personalfitnessresearch.com/personal-fitness-based-on-science/

I hope this helps! Oh, one more thing. You can expect that the HCG diet will not lead to loss of lean body mass, so any tiredness that is associated with the diet (during or after) is temporary.

    All the best,
    Dr. D

I guess more than anything I had a few questions. I am a type 2, and was diagnosed as such when I was 12 years old. Ever since I could remember I have had blood sugar issues along with other health problems. I am now 30 and suffering from diabetic retinopathy (have had three laser procedures thus far) and no telling what other problems will still develope. I also was on synthroid in my teens but discontinued it when I couldn’t pay for many of my meds after I graduated and was not covered under my parents insurance. I am currently on Actos, glipizide, metformin, and lisinopril. Even with increased activity and watching what I eat, I can’t get anything under control. I know that my weight in and of it self has fueled and made issues worse for me over the years. I need something to break this cycle. I don’t want to be dependant on meds and I don’t like how my health is going. Is this a viable option for me? Looking at a lot of the information out there, it looks like it might….I just want to make sure. Any advice?

First and foremost, you absolutely must do the right thing to get rid of excess fat. Everything that is out of whack with your health starts there. It just so happens that the most straightforward way to remove abnormal body fat (i.e., the ‘right thing’) is to reestablish your fat metabolism with HCG. It you keep studying this program to see whether it is right for you, you will never do it. So just do it! Then, the best way to find out truly good information about how to eat is to see what is being said, by whom, and why. I have found nothing better about diet, health, and nutrition in the scientific literature than the work of T. Colin Campbell. His book, The China Study, is where everyone should start. Most diet books can be best used as fire starter, as far as I’m concerned. Campbell’s summary of scientific literature is the best there is.
